Young Stars Help Lower North Coast Rebuild At 2013 Interbranch

The Lower North Coast team have finished fifth in the Country Standings, topping the Far South Coast team despite fielding a smaller squad during the Interbranch Championships at Soldiers Beach over the weekend.

With signs that the rebuilding process for the branch is starting to bear fruit, some of their youngest stars sealed some strong results against NSW’s best Surf Sports athletes.

Claire Horn (Cape Hawke) finished third in the U14s Female Beach Flags while Claire Van Kampen (Cape Hawke) finished third in the U12 Female Surf Race.

Team Coach Chris Grant said that the squad have really concentrated on creating a positive experience for the younger athletes during this rebuilding process.

“Our new kids are really enjoying themselves at the moment. It’s not always about winning but it’s always about creating a positive experience for our kids and forging a bond throughout the team.

“Our team is definitely a young one and some of our 15 and 16yr are racing up an age division this weekend so it’s a good experience for them before the Country Championships in January.”

12yr old Katarina Kladis from Wingham who is part of Black Head SLSC loved her first experience at the Interbranch Championships this year.

“I really loved my first time here. You make a lot of friends from different clubs within your team and get to enjoy being more professional against some of the elite athletes from the city.”
