ABOUT LIFEGUARDING
Local Government Authorities have, for many years, been aware of the need for adequate water safety facilities being available if their responsibilities are coastal orientated. In some instances, Councils have acted in the public interest by employing surf lifesavers to complement the work of the Surf Life Saving Clubs during week days and off peak periods. To date, these services have been most helpful, and in fact in a great many cases, quite adequate.
The public need, unfortunately, has changed rather dramatically, brought about by real estate development, and growth of coastal resorts and the tourist industry. The popularity of a greater variety of aquatic recreational pursuits, increased leisure hours and rapidly developing tourism has further added to problems of protection for the bathing public.
No longer can Councils, State Government, Resort developers or Surf Life Saving NSW, be complacent about water safety and public protection.
To meet and service the needs associated with the rapid increase of beach and ocean patronage, Surf Life Saving NSW, with the support of its affiliated Clubs and Branches, can provide professional lifeguard services on behalf of local government to complement the work of our volunteer surf life saving clubs.
Surf Life Saving is highly qualified in the area of surfing and water safety through experience evolved from 100 years of active research, development and practice of rescue, resuscitation and first aid techniques and skills.
The service provided by the Surf Life Saving NSW embraces all radio communication networks, training and education and emergency back-up services such as the "Westpac Lifesaver" Helicopter Rescue Service and Jet Rescue Boat Services.
In short, this is our core business and the Surf Life Saving Services is well qualified to advise and act in this area. |
