MONEY WELL SPENT
Every year the Guardians of the Surf and raffle programs help us to provide financial support to our Clubs. The continuing success of the program has meant that last December, each Club received over $3,000. A few Clubs sent in a note of appreciation and it was great to see how the money was able to assist. We thought it would be worthwhile sharing some of these with the membership.

“I would like to thank you for your recent donation. Support of this nature is very much appreciated by our members; it makes them feel that their voluntary hours of looking after the surfing public are being appreciated. Our Club has a great group of very keen youth members at the moment, so the funds will help us educate, train and retain these members.”

“This contribution is most welcome as it comes as we near the end of our rebuild stage. Updating our equipment to the best we can provide is of high importance as we continue to give the best service to our beach as possible.”

“Thank you for the generous proceeds from the Guardians of the Surf fundraising programs. As you are aware surf lifesaving clubs are always renewing their equipment and these funds will be used towards our continuous upgrades in lifesaving equipment.”

“We thank you for coordinating the donation and please relay to your executive that the funds are much appreciated and will be used wisely in the purchase of lifesaving equipment.”

Saturday April 12, 2008 - Mingara Recreation Club - Mingara Drive TUMBI UMBI NSW 2261.
The aim of the Donnica Clarke Foundation Limited (ABN 161 29 004 860) is to offer financial and moral support to young emerging athletes, male and female, across all sports from the Central Coast region. Nica was a dual Australian Surf Life Saving beach sprint and flags champion, won at Kurrawa Beach on the Gold Coast in 2005 and her loss is the inspiration for the Foundation that bears her name. The inaugural Sports Dinner, on April 12 at Mingara Recreation Club, will be the major fundraiser to establish the financial reserves to meet the aims of the Foundation. UPDATES

2008 NOMINATIONS FOR OFFICE
Please find attached the Surf Life Saving New South Wales nomination for office form for 2008. Click here for the form.

TRAUMA AND ALCOHOL DUAL TREATMENT TRIAL
When we’re involved in a rescue or we witness a traumatic accident, it can have a lasting effect. How we handle this trauma varies from person to person and some find that alcohol offers a way to cope. The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre has recognised the connection between trauma and alcohol use and has started a trial to work out if treating people for post-traumatic stress and alcohol abuse at the same time offers effective treatment. The trial (UNSW Ethics Approval No.455221) will use therapies that have worked for both problems separately, but will bring them together. The trial will be run at various sites in Camperdown, Randwick and Parramatta and it offers 12 sessions of individual therapy by qualified psychologists. If you’re interested, you need to be 18 years or older, have experienced trauma which still causes distress, and be drinking at risky levels. If you are interested or require further information please contact:
Dr Kylie Sutherland on 02 9385 0183 or
Ms Kirsty Taylor on 02 9385 0179
Any members requiring further assistance and unable to be involved with the trials are reminded that SLSNSW recommend the use of Lifeline which provides a telephone counselling service across NSW (call 131 114) or contact your local GP.

NEW LIQUOR LAWS AND WHAT THEY MEAN FOR CLUBS
The new Liquor Act for New South Wales that was passed by parliament on 5 December last year is raising questions for many Clubs. While the Act has been made law, it is in the early stages of development and the fine detail is still not available from the Department of Liquor, Gaming and Racing. In the meantime, existing liquor licence conditions and arrangements continue to apply. The link below will take you to the Department’s guidelines on the new legislation in their entirety. There are links to the Act and recommendations for those who have to renew licenses.
We will provide further details, specifically for Surf Clubs as they come to hand.

As you may be aware the National Emergency Volunteer Support Fund 2008/09 funding round (EMA grants) has been announced and further details can be found at http://www.ema.gov.au/. In past years many branches and clubs have been successful in obtaining these grants and it is a great opportunity to gain funds for special projects to a maximum of $50,000. In addition the Department requires a Hard Copy of the application signed by the relevant required officer together with an Electronic Copy of the application.
