18-25 LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - NOMINATIONS CLOSE MONDAY The program is a great opportunity for Branches to foster members’ leadership potential and facilitate teamwork, goal-setting and above all personal growth. The program is aimed at members, whose clubs and branches believe they have leadership qualities that can be developed to enhance their future. 2008 NSW JUNIOR LIFESAVER OF THE YEAR - NOMINATIONS CLOSE SOON The NSW Junior Lifesaver of the Year Award is a great opportunity for Clubs and Branches to recognise their Under 14 members' ability and achievements in surf lifesaving and the contributions they have made to their Club, Branch and community. VOLUNTEER, SURF LIFESAVER, CLUB, LIFEGUARD, ATHLETE, COACH AND OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR Nominations are being called for the 2008 State and National Recognition Awards, recognising the Volunteer, Surf Lifesaver, Club, Lifeguard, Athlete, Coach and Official of the Year. This is an opportune time for Clubs and Branches to recognise members who have provided an exceptional service to Clubs, Branches and the community in the 2007/08 season. DECEMBER PATROL HOURS AND STATISTICS SHOULD NOW BE ENTERED IN SURFGUARD As per the SLSNSW Standard Operating Procedures, all clubs and support operation entities are reminded that, “All Patrol Hours and Patrol Statistics must be entered into SurfGuard off the patrol logs within seven days following the last days of the month.” This means that if your club is yet to enter this data into SurfGuard it is important that you do so ASAP. This will be monitored regularly by Branch Directors of Lifesaving and SLSNSW Support Officers throughout the season as it is extremely important to ensure the community's high expectations of are maintained.
2008 ILLAWARRA MCDONALDS NIPPER CLINIC On Saturday 19 January 2008 Bulli Surf Club will be hosting the Illawarra McDonald’s Nippers Clinic’ from 9am to 12noon which is open to all members. The program will be offering advice on training and racing strategies, nutrition, swim, craft & beach racing techniques and general surf awareness. The sessions have been constructed by NSW & Australian Team Manager Keith Caldwell, and Australian Pool Rescue Team captain Downie Langthorne. The Clinic will also feature Australian team members Naomi Flood, Chris Allum, Matt Freeman, and Cara Langendam, as well as 2007 NIB Coolangatta Gold stars Drew Cairncross (3rd) and Ben Allen (7th). MANLY & FRESHWATER CARNIVALS There has been some confusion over the timing of the annual Manly and Freshwater carnivals over the Australia Day long weekend. Please note that the Westpac Manly Surf Carnival will take place from 25-27 January, with Surf Board Riding and First Aid Competitions on Friday 25 January, Surf Boats on Australia Day and all other events on Sunday 27 January. Surf Boats at the Freshwater Australia Day Carnival will take place on Sunday 27 January, with all other events taking place on Australia Day.
SUPER SUMMER RAFFLE The second Super Summer Raffle is underway, and SLSNSW is inviting clubs to take part in selling raffle tickets. The main focus is that your club receives a percentage of the funds made and deposits the remaining to SLSNSW. If you are interested in participating please email Samantha Dalton who will send your club more information and tickets. The Raffle started on Monday 17 December 2007 and closes Friday 29 February 2008, so we would like to send you your tickets ASAP. 2008 WORLD ANTI-DOPING AGENCY PROHIBITED LIST The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) updates its Prohibited List prior to the commencement of each calendar year. Please ensure that your members are up to date with the 2008 WADA Prohibited List, and the Summary of Modifications to the 2008 WADA Prohibited List (in particular please note that intravenous infusions have been made a Prohibited Method - see Section M2 of the List - the use of intravenous infusions is therefore banned at all times unless the subject of a Therapeutic Use Exemption. Remember to check your medication with the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency Hotline on 1800 020 506 if you have any queries.
ON THE SAME WAVE Following the success of the On the Same Wave program in engaging and providing Surf Education and Surf Awareness to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities, SLSNSW is now actively looking to make the program more sustainable by actively encouraging the engagement of Surf Clubs to become involved in delivering these programs with the support from SLSNSW. The program delivery can be as basic as communicating the message to swim between the flags, providing a tour of the Surf Club or engaging community groups in surf safety programs that you already deliver. NSW SUBURBAN RUGBY UNION SURF CLUB COMPETITION The NSW Suburban Rugby Union is looking to run a Sydney-based rugby competition exclusively for Surf Life Saving Clubs in 2008. The Suburban Rugby Union runs the largest rugby competition in Australia, with over six divisions and 7000 registered players. The Union is offering this unique competition to any Surf Club in Sydney. The proposed Surf Life Saving rugby competition will be organised so as not to conflict with any Surf Club commitments. Lifeguards - 2007/08 Season Lifeguards required for the following Council areas: Clarence Valley (Minnie Water /Wooli), Greater Taree, Shoalhaven, Eurobodalla and Bega Valley.
** Applications for the Pittwater Council Trainee (Rookie) Program close Friday 7 December 2007. (Applicants must be 16-17 years of age, have the SLSA Bronze Medallion and be an active patrolling member of a Pittwater Council SLSC. Applicants must be able to swim 400m in less than seven minutes.)
** Lifeguards are also required for the NSW Summer school holidays in the Port Stephens, Great Lakes, Kempsey, Nambucca and Bellingen Council areas.
