STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008


2008 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CAMPIONSHIPS ROUND-UP
For those who made the journey to beautiful Blacksmiths Beach for the State Titles we trust you had an enjoyable time. For a full round-up of the action see the daily reports here. There are also links to the full results for the Age, Masters and Open Championships. If your younger members competed at the Age titles, we’re assured that photographs will be available on the Professional Event Photography website within the next few days. SLSNSW AWARDS ITS TOP SURF LIFESAVERS AND VOLUNTEERS
During the championships, the action stopped during the Age and Allphones Open titles for the presentation of the movement’s most prestigious awards. 2008 Junior Surf Lifesaver of the Year was awarded to Sophie Hardcastle of Long Reef (Sydney Northern Beaches) and Allan Abraham of Taree-Old Bar (Lower North Coast). The 2007 Surf Lifesaver of the year was awarded to Mitch Dawson, one of the youngest recipients of the award at just 21 years, who is Club Captain with Tacking Point. Meanwhile, Lyn Cumming, President of Central Coast club, Toowoon Bay, won the 2007 Volunteer of the Year.

NORTH STEYNE PICKED AS NSW NOMINEE FOR SLSA CLUB OF THE YEAR
With the Aussies looming, one Northern Beaches club is preparing to strut its stuff for NSW in the Surf Life Saving Australia Club of the Year award. North Steyne was named as the NSW nominee for the club’s for undertaking a membership survey that fueled changes including mentoring programs, environmental initiatives and proficiency training during patrols. YOUTH OPPORTUNITY MAKERS - APPLICATION CLOSE WEDNESDAY!
Surf Life Saving New South Wales invites nominations for the 2008 Youth Opportunity Makers workshop. The workshop is geared towards creating greater awareness of opportunities and individual abilities in 15-17 year old members. Branches are encouraged to use this workshop as a method of recognising members who have the potential to develop skills further by working with like-minded youth. FEBRUARY PATROL HOURS AND STATISTICS SHOULD NOW BE ENTERED IN SURFGUARD
As per the SLSNSW Standard Operating Procedures and the 2007 Proficiency Pack, all Clubs and Support Operations are reminded that, “All Patrol Hours and Statistics from the Patrol Logs must be entered into SurfGuard with in 7 days following the last day of the month.” This means that if your club is yet to enter this data in SurfGuard for February you will need to do so ASAP

CITY OF PERTH SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB ENTERTAINMENT
The City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club, Challenger Parade, City Beach will be hosting two fantastic events this year:
* Saturday 5th of April – Pool Party on the largest balcony on the west.
DJ – playing great hits, Entry $15 – tickets available on the door, Doors open at 7pm, 18+ event. See attached FLYER for more information

* Sunday 6th of April – 2nd Annual After Aussies Celebration, Entry $15 – tickets available on the door, DJ – playing great hits, Doors open at 8pm, 18+ event. See attached FLYER for more information.
The Club Bar will be open Wednesday through Saturday afternoons from 4pm onwards. All drinks at club prices. Food will be available.

INAUGURAL TAMARAMA OCEAN SWIM - SUN 13 APRIL
If you’re ever been to Tamarama beach around 10 o’clock on a Saturday morning you will have noticed a group of swimmers heading out for a quick dip to McKenzie’s then over to Bronte and back in to Tama.  They are the Tamarama Ocean Swim Squad (or TOSS) and made up of lifesavers from around the eastern beaches. Now their swim has become so successful they’re starting up an annual Ocean Swim and it will be open to anyone who fancies a bit of ocean swimming. Click here for entry form.

PACIFIC PALMS REAL ESTATE 'ROCK TO ROCK'
Pacific Palms SLSC is holding their annual Pacific Palms Real Estate 'Rock to Rock' 1.5km ocean swim on Easter Sunday, 23 March 2008. $25 entry includes cap and free BBQ sandwich. Prize money for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female, medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings in each age category

FORSTER SLSC - CLUB TO CLUB SWIM
Forster SLSC main fundraiser for the year is coming up on the 27th April being the club to club swim – Cape Hawke Surf Club to Forster Surf Club 3.8k Ocean Swim along with the easier YMCA Pebbly Beach 1k swim. On line entry is available through http://www.oceanswims.com/

YOUTH PARTICIPANT GRANTS PROGRAM
Youth Action and Policy Association (YAPA) are offering grants to the value of $5,500 to young people between the ages of 12 – 25 for community activities in their local area.  The activity / project will demonstrate that;

the project benefits the community in some way
the idea for the project has come from young people
the application has been created by young people
the project will increase community interaction

ALL MASTERS COMPETITORS are invited to Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club West Coast Drive SORRENTO (7km north of Scarborough) on Wednesday 2 April 2008, 6.30pm onwards. Join us for a night of celebration; relax by the sweeping views of the Indian Ocean; enjoy a good selection of drinks; gourmet wood fired pizzas; spectacular sunset; live music; wonderful company amongst fellow members from clubs Australia wide. SURF LIFE SAVING STAR TO CHAIR GOVERNMENT YOUTH COUNCIL
NSW Minister for Youth, Linda Burney has announced the 2008 Chair of the NSW 2008 Youth Advisory Council is Surf Life Saving Illawarra Branch Development Officer Amanda Scott. Amanda, who was a member of the Council last year, is joined by North Bondi SLSC Lifesaver Martin Drennan who also served on the 2007 NSW Youth Advisory Council. Both active Surf Lifesavers, Amanda and Martin will advise the NSW Government on issues that are important to young people. Click here for full media release.

PETALS ON THE WATER
Petals on the Water Ltd invite female boat crews and any male boat crews to participate in a memorial service for breast cancer. “Petals on the Water” will be held in Farm Cove near the Opera House on Sunday 11 May 2008 at 11.00am in conjunction with the Mothers Day Classic Walk for breast cancer and the Pinkwater Pinks Dragon Boats breast cancer survivors. LIFEGUARD OFFICER - Full Time
Surf Life Saving Services is a wholly owned subsidy of Surf Life Saving NSW and is currently contracted to provide quality Lifeguard services to 16 seaside councils. An opportunity exists for a committed, hardworking individual to join our dedicated team working from our Headquarters at Narrabeen.  Reporting to the Manager, Lifesaving Services you will be responsible for the quality and management of over 16 Lifeguard Services contracts spanning across NSW. The successful applicant will be suitably qualified and/or have experience in contract management and lifesaving services.  You will also have an understanding of Surf Life Saving and an appreciation of not-for-profit, volunteer based, membership oriented organisations.
