QUALIFICATIONS & DUTIES Essential Qualifications:
A current SLSA Gold Medallion or have the ability to obtain a SLSA Gold Medallion. A current NSW Workcover approved First Aid Certificate. Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised. Proven ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public. Possess good interpersonal skills. Lifeguarding/lifesaving patrol experience. Demonstrate an ability to work in a team situation. A current NSW motor vehicle driver's license.
Essential personal specifications:
The lifeguard is required to keep physically fit to perform all lifeguard duties. The fitness to be at a level to enable him/her to pass the following - 800 metre pool swim under 14 minutes. 1600 metre run under 7 minutes. Demonstrate an ability to rescue and return to shore on rescue board over 250 metres. Demonstrate an ability to negotiate a surf break on return to shore on rescue board. Demonstrate an ability in a 150 metre rescue tube swim, patient pick up and return to shore. Successfully demonstrate EAR and CPR - one and two person. Successfully complete a theory examination. Successfully complete a run/swim/board time trial.
Appointment Policy
1 This policy is for the appointment of Australian Lifeguard Services permanent and seasonal staff. This policy is in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act, 1993 (NSW) ensuring that the recruitment of staff is to be based on the merit of each and every applicant.
This policy will cover all employees of Australian Lifeguard Services .
2 When a decision is made by management to fill a vacant position:
a) only a person who has applied for appointment to the position may be selected; and
b) from among the applicants eligible for appointment, the applicant who has the greatest merit is to be selected.
The merit of the persons eligible for appointment to a position is to be determined according to:
a) the nature of the duties of the position; and
b) the proven abilities, qualifications, experience and standard of work performance of those persons relevant to those duties.
3 Definitions in the context of this policy and procedure:
Merit To the highest degree of suitability and capability for appointment.
Abilities Skills, competencies, talents and personal attributes of applicants. Qualifications Will include academic attainments, professional experience, professional qualifications, membership of trade and professional associations, licenses, certificates, successful completion of training programs and other accredited training.
Experience The assessment of experience is not limited to experience acquired through employment with Australian Lifeguard Services. This is measured in terms of the quality of training, knowledge, talents and ability gained by an applicant through work and non-work experiences.
Standard of Work Performance The degree of competence, efficiency and reliability exhibited by an applicant in the performance of current and past positions.
Criteria The requirements of the position criteria may be both essential and desirable. Essential criteria refers to that which is required in order to perform all aspects of the job competently. Desirable criteria refers to that which is not essential but which would enable the job to be performed above a competent level. Criteria may be expressed in a number of forms including skills, qualifications, interpersonal skills, communication skills and experience.
Weighting A score attributed to each aspect of criteria according to its relative importance to the position. Applicants are assessed according to each aspect of the weighted criteria and an aggregate weighted score is determined to assess relative merit.
Cull The process whereby applicants are assessed by the Appointments Committee according to the selection criteria, and eliminated from further consideration where they do not meet the essential requirements for a position. Short-List A list of applicants selected for interview following the process of culling, or selected for second interview following initial assessment by the Appointments Committee at a first interview stage. Ranking The situation where applicants are assessed against each aspect of the weighted criteria, given an aggregate points weighting, and then placed in a scale from highest to lowest in order of aggregate weighting. The applicant with the highest ranking is deemed to have greatest merit. Nature of the Duties of the Position This is determined in accordance with the position statement/job description for the position. The formal recruitment process employed by Surf Life Saving Services is a six (6) stage process, consisting of: 1 Formal advertisement. All applicants must clearly demonstrate how they meet the advertised criteria.
2 Cull process. Only those applicants who meet all the essential and desirable criteria will proceed.
3 Physical Component All applicants are tested to the advanced lifesaving/gold medallion level.
4 Interview A full interview is then undertaken to further examine the applicants ability to perform the lifeguard duties .
5 Medical All proposed successful applicants will undertake a full medical assessment .
6 Induction All successful applicants will be required to complete and pass a formal training program before being deployed to operational positions. |
