Illawarra surfers Darren Longbottom & Tim Rushby-Smith have teamed up to write an incredible book surrounding the events of Darren's freak accident, terrifying rescue and his long journey home after suffering a life changing injury while on a surf trip in Indonesia. To celebrate the launch of their book we have five (5) copies to giveaway.

To win one of these truly inspiring books for yourself, simply submit one of your own photos of the best you’ve ever seen your beach, by 5pm Sunday 29th July 2018.

Beyond The Break Synopsis


Darren 'Daz' Longbottom was born to surf. The son of surfing pioneer and board-maker Rossco, and brother to legendary big-wave specialist Dylan, Daz paddled out with world champions from a young age. He was one of the overexcited 'access all areas' grommets behind the rope when the World Tour rolled into Australia.



After the Longbottom brothers' first surf experiences in Cronulla, where they belonged in the waves alongside the very best in surfing, Dylan went on the road as a 'free surfer', while Daz pursued a career in the surf industry, learning all aspects of the trade and setting up a successful business. But Daz's passion for waves would very nearly cost him his life, and would test his resilience and determination in unimaginable ways.



When Daz said goodbye to his wife and baby daughter to go on a surf trip with friends to the remote Mentawai Islands off Indonesia, it was the fulfilment of a long-held ambition. But he could never have foreseen just how difficult the road home would be, or how his life would be changed so profoundly.



Beyond the Break is the tale of a freak accident, a terrifying rescue and the long and painful journey home. It is a story of coming to terms with the life-changing consequences of riding a single wave.

  4. Entry must be one photograph of 'The Best You've Ever Seen Your Beach'. Judges will decide the best 10 entries as finalists. Finalists will be displayed for voting on Monday 30 July with voting open until Tuesday 31 July 2018. Voting is via Readymag and Facebook.

  5. Entry must be submitted via Instagram or via email to media@surflifesaving.com.au

  6. The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

  7. Surf Life Saving NSW reserves the right to change or withdraw this promotion at any time.

  8. This is a game of skill and chance plays no part in determining the winner. Each entry will be judged based on creative merit. The Judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

  9. The best eligible entry, as determined by the judges’, will win the prize of: One (1): Beyond The Break book to the value of $34.99AU

  13. The winner will be notified by email or social media within 30 days of the competition close date, and published on the Surf Life Saving NSW Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages.

If for any reason this competition is not capable of running as planned (including but not limited to) infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorised intervention, fraud, technical failures or any other causes beyond the control of Surf Life Saving NSW which corrupts or affect the administration security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this competition, Surf Life Saving NSW reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the competition.

Surf Life Saving NSW is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer on line systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any web site, or any combination thereof, (including but not limited to) any injury or damage to participants or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participation in or down-loading any materials in this competition.
