The State Duty Officer is responsible for the management of the day to day functions of the State Operations Centre which is the primary communications and coordination hub for all coastal emergencies. The role will monitor the Surf Emergency Response System (SERS) to reduce response times, maximise agency coordination, minimise ambiguity, and ensure member safety. The role will achieve this by being the primary point of contact for all Emergency Services, relevant agencies, and appropriate Lifesaving personnel in the coordination of incidents along the NSW coastline. The role is also responsible for monitoring and maintaining all technical systems utilised by the State Operations Centre in fulfilling its function as a state-of-the-art emergency operations facility.

Key responsibilities

  • Communicate with and coordinate SLSNSW response to related agencies in a timely manner
  • Record details of incidents and emergencies accurately in the system
  • Monitor radio network and undertake basic testing as required
  • Manage various data and video inputs to provide incident overwatch or situational awareness.
  • Provide financial information and assist in collating all expenditure

Skills & Experience:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the NSW coastline
  • Prior Emergency Service Organisation or Emergency Management experience
  • Experience in radio communications or Call and Dispatch systems
  • Excellent critical reasoning, organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and Public HolidaysExperience and technical knowledge of surf lifesaving or similar public safety roles and an understanding of Surf Life Saving procedures, practices and policies
  • Current or enrolled in Emergency Management qualifications
  • High level of computer, contact management and database skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills at all levels
  • People-management skills with proven ability to lead and motivate others
