Country Champs Athlete Profile: Rhys Flood
With the 2015 Stramit NSW Country Championships just around the corner, SLSNSW takes a look at some of those hoping to make their mark on the event. Today we profile Rhys Flood from Broulee Surfers SLC.
Rhys Flood from Broulee Surfers SLSC tasted success at his first appearance at a Country Championship in 2014 claiming a silver medal in the U10 flags. This ambitious youngster has medal ambitions – he feels his team can get on the podium in the sprint relay, but he says his main goal is to enjoy the experience.
Name: Rhys Flood
Club: Broulee Surfers SLSC
Age Group: Under 11
Events you are planning to contest: Flags, beach sprint, boards & relays
Previous appearances or results at Country Champs or other major events:
I finished 2nd place at the Country Championships in the U10 flags last year. I have also been named the Far South Coast Branch champion for flags and beach sprints for the past 3 seasons which was a great honour.
I attended Mollymook and competed in the Country Championships for the first time in 2014 as a U10 competitor.
How long have you been involved in surf lifesaving?
I have been a part of Surf Life Saving for 4 years. I started nippers in 2010 in the U8s at Broulee.
What do you enjoy most about being a member of a surf lifesaving club?
I especially love competing in the beach events and boards. I enjoy meeting up with the friends I have made at nippers over the past 4 years, it’s great going to carnivals together.
How has your training been going for the Country Championships?
We are very lucky at Broulee to have great age managers in the U11s. Scott Elliott & David Hoskings, who started weekly board training sessions last season, have made a huge difference to everyone’s confidence on the boards.
A year ago I was a bit nervous on the boards but now I really enjoy getting out there. In terms of the beach events, I don’t do any specific training, I have always loved running and train for that.
What are your goals for the Championships and the rest of the season?
I hope to do well at the Country Championships. I was extremely happy with my silver in the flags last year and would be very happy if I could place again. I would like to improve on my result in the beach sprint. It would be great for our sprint relay team to reach the podium. We did really well last year and hopefully can again this year.
As for the rest of the season, I would like to do well enough in my age group to be selected for the South Coast Branch team for next season so that I can compete at Interbranch Championships in December. I would love the chance to travel away and compete with some of my Broulee friends.
Do you have any pre-event superstitions or preparations?
I don’t have any superstitions but I always eat a banana for energy.
What are you most looking forward to about Country Championships?
Having a good time with my friends, competing, and hopefully doing well.
The 2015 Stramit NSW Country Championships will be held at Mollymook Beach on Jan 16-18.
