Encouraging Signs For North Coast
It has been described as one of their best performances at Interbranch level in recent years, and now North Coast surf athletes are keen to ride this sense of optimism into what promises to be a highly competitive season.
While Sydney Northern Beaches claimed overall honours after two days of competition at Cape Hawke SLSC, ultimately defending the title they regained last year, North Coast finished in highly creditable 7th position.
In a result sure to boost the area’s best surf athletes confidence ahead of February’s Country Championships to be held at South West Rocks, their results were enough to earn second place in the Country Cup behind only the Far North Coast Branch.
Team manager Kevin Clancy was delighted with the performance of his charges and feels the most encouraging result to come out of the championships was the leadership shown by the experienced athletes who mentored the younger competitors to a series of positive results.
“The weekend has been very good for us and has been one of our best finishers to an Interbranch Championships. You can see by the results of the athletes that they love the team events and they always put in the extra effort because they know their team mates are cheering them on,” Clancy said.
“The older athletes have been very generous with their time and they really look after the kids. A lot of them have great knowledge and they’re reasonable competitors so the younger athletes look up to them. This is a great warm up for Country Champs and we can now all look forward to that weekend.”
Young gun Tahlia Kollen who was one of the team’s best performers winning gold in the U17 Swim said that there was a great spirit in the team this season.
“I’ve had a couple of good results and I didn’t expect to come out first in the swim so that was very pleasing. All the pressures of the individual events are over so the team races were very fun and it’s a plus to be part of them,” Kollen said.
“The North Coast have placed well this weekend especially in the younger age groups and it’s great to see particularly as we look towards the future.”
