NSW Clubs Receive National Awards
Three NSW Surf Life Saving Clubs were presented with their National Rescue of the Month awards this morning at Parliament House in Canberra.
Fingal Rovers, Wamberal and Bulli surf lifesavers received their awards from SLSA President, Graham Ford AM and Co-Chairs of the Parliamentary Friends of Surf Life Saving , Sarah Henderson MP and Matt Thistlethwaite MP.
Surf Life Saving Australia presented the three National awards to NSW clubs which is an amazing effort and is reflective of the great work all NSW surf lifesavers perform on and off patrol.
The Far North Coast Club Fingal Rovers was received the National award for October after Debrah Cheers rescued a female who had entered the water to save the life of a child swept from rocks at Fingal Headland, while Chris Dennis rescued the young boy.
Denver Brown, a member of Wamberal SLSC on the Central Coast received national recognition thanks to his courageous effort in November to rescue two female teenagers who were in distress and caught in a rip off Wamberal Beach.
Bulli SLSC received its National Rescue of the Month award for December after a team of surf lifesavers rescued six swimmers when a large set of waves barrelled through the flagged area and pulled them 100 metres out to sea.
One of the Illawarra surf lifesavers involved in the rescue attended today’s ceremony, Grahame Bilton was very humble in receiving the recognition.
“The way in which our patrol reacted is in no way different to how any patrol within Bulli SLSC, or any surf club anywhere in Australia would have conducted themselves,” said Grahame Bilton.
“We truly appreciate the recognition by receiving the NSW and National Surf Life Saving awards.”
Looking back on the rescue which occurred on 6 December 2015, Grahame Bilton is proud of the action his fellow surf lifesavers performed on that day.
“What happened on our watch took us all by surprise as vigilant as our patrol prides itself to be,” said Grahame Bilton.
“The way in which all my fellow patrol members reacted was truly amazing and I’m extremely proud to say, I have the pleasure and honour to not only patrol alongside them, but to support and learn from each one of them.”
Grahame's fellow patrol members who were involved in the rescue include Dean Dudley, Kiah Taylor, Kaimana Fittock, Zara Sharman, Morgan Richards, Daniel St George and Stuart Brown.
