Search For Next Junior Lifesaver of The Year
The next generation of leaders within the surf life saving movement are being put through their paces at an exciting development camp on Sydney’s Northern Beaches this week, with the opportunity for one participant to be crowned Junior Lifesaver of The Year
This award is open only to junior club members in the U14 age group who have demonstrated dedication to their club and leadership potential throughout their time in juniors.
Each of the 11 branches from around the State have selected a male and female finalist, and for many of these lifesavers it is the first time they have had the opportunity to come together with other likeminded individuals in a formal leadership setting.
The focus of the four-day camp at the Sydney Academy of Sport Recreation Centre Narrabeen in April, is to expose these young leaders to the different styles of leadership, and future opportunities within surf life saving.
Many previous attendees of the camp have gone on to hold key leadership roles within their clubs and branches, and it is hoped that the class of 2015 will follow in their footsteps.
During the week the NSW Junior Lifesaver of The Year finalists will be interviewed by a selection panel that will help determine the overall Junior Lifesaver of the Year, with the winner to be announced at a ceremony on Friday 10 April.
Surf Life Saving NSW Member Services Manager Kate Higginbotham believes that while being named the NSW Junior Lifesaver of The Year is a fantastic achievement, the opportunity to make contact with young leaders from other clubs, and be exposed to leadership techniques will continue to bring benefits to those who attend.
“These young club members are at the beginning of their journey within surf life saving, and while not all of them will be crowned NSW Junior Lifesaver of The Year, we hope that they all have an enjoyable time at this exciting development camp.
The junior life savers aren’t the only ones being given the opportunity to further their leadership skills at a development camp this week, with a group of club members (aged 15-17) from across NSW attending the annual Youth Opportunity Makers program, which is being held concurrently at Narrabeen.
