Strong Showing For South Coast Ahead Of Country Champs
The South Coast Branch had a strong hit out finishing second out of the Country Branches at the 2013 Interbranch Championships on Soldiers Beach at the Central Coast this weekend.
Despite losing the Country title to the Far North Coast this year, the team had enough strong performances across the full spectrum of ages and events to sound a serious warning that South Coast surf clubs and their athletes will be there to dominate the 2014 Stramit Country Championships at Mollymook in January.
Ben Carberry (Warilla Barrack Point) typified the strength of the South Coast winning the Opens Ironman and Male Ski and finishing second in the Open Male Surf Race in tricky wind chopped conditions on the first day.
“There really was a lot of variables out there on Saturday, you just had to pick the right line through the surf and hope you can get a good one back in and luckily I managed to do that.
“I’m looking forward to Country this year and having the event in our branch in Mollymook will be especially good and hopefully the home crowds turn out in force to cheer us on.”
Proving the team’s strength across the field Kate Lewis (Kiama) took out the U15s Beach Flags, beating NSW Champion Ngaire Hadfield (Cronulla) in the process.
“I’ve only ever beat Ngaire once before so I’m pretty chuffed. She’s so quick but I guess today was just my day and my preparation has been really great.”
Mitchell Velthuis (Warilla) and Jack Carberry (Warilla) finished second and third in the Under 19 Male Board Race to finish equal first in the team scores while Taylah Allen (Warilla), Matt Sperring (Warilla), Isabella Brennan (Shellharbour) and Kyle Attard (Shellharbour) combined to win the U14s Cameron Relay.
