Surf Life Saving Backs Lifejackets for Rockfishers
Surf Life Saving NSW welcomes the announcement by the Minister for Emergency Services David Elliot that legislation will be introduced to make lifejackets compulsory for people fishing from rocks at high-risk locations.
Lifesaving Manager Andy Kent says the announcement is a positive one and that Surf Life Saving NSW is looking forward to being part of the Working Group which will help identify high-risk locations and other factors which will determine where and how the new legislation could be rolled out.
“We have been working with emergency services, Department of Primary Industries and recreational rockfishing groups for some time to try to find answers to the high incidence of drowning among rockfishers,” said Andy Kent.
A renewed focus on education is also good news and Surf Life Saving has been involved in delivering community education programs to at risk groups, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, for some time.
“Reinforcing the safety messages to target groups at risk is also a great initiative and we will support the government’s efforts in any way we can,” said Andy Kent.
