Surf Life Saving clubs in NSW work hard to spread the message of beach safety to CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) communities, including refugees and migrants.

On World Refugee Day (Thursday 20 June) we recognise programs that make a difference and work to save lives for those who are new to Australia.

Tamarama SLSC runs regular beach safety programs for some of Sydney's newest refugees and migrants. Alex Chang immigrated to Australia from South Korea with his partner in 2017. When he first arrived he could not swim and just 18 months later he has completed his Bronze Medallion and IRB Crew qualifications and is part of the Tamarama SLSC community education program.

Alex loves being part of educating refugees and migrants about how to stay safe on the Australian coast. He said, "Many people new to Australia find themselves caught in dangerous situations at the beach, they are unaware of the risks associated with the ocean because they have not grown up around it. I think people relate to my experience and like to hear my story. Hopefully, it inspires them to learn to swim and how to stay safe at the beach."
