Our aim is to give your child the best experience possible in a welcoming and safe environment where they can build skills, knowledge, fitness, confidence and friendships and become a part of a lifelong community! You might be a part of that community yourself or not, it doesn’t matter either way, everyone has a role to play.

As your child progresses through the age groups of course we want to encourage them to be as independent as possible, managing their own time and commitments. However, this is not always realistic, and they may need extra support to pursue further opportunities. Recognition is a key driver in youth participation, so just by being aware of what they’re up to at their club, you’ll be encouraging their development.

If they’re willing to put the time in they can gain qualifications, skills, awards and even paid employment through their SLS journey. If you want them to progress it might be helpful to know what’s on offer so you can help them assess their own goals.

See the documents below for an overview of what’s on offer and how to access it. If you aren’t sure and can’t find the information you’re looking for below, try reaching out to your club’s Youth Officer for more locally specific information.

The Youth Participation Pathways share the opportunities available to members at every age of their surf lifesaving journey.  A great resource to explore and understand the opportunities available within the club environment.

The skills gained in Surf Life Saving can link to a range of paid employment opportunities for members aged 16 and above. Learn about the available roles, their requirements, and how you can support their application using the Youth Employment Factsheet.

Patrols are where the magic happens – It’s where we keep our community safe and have a blast while doing it. Patrol teams are made up of some of the most skilled lifesavers in Australia, and you’re about to become one of them!

Here’s a quick rundown of how to prepare for your first Patrol:

🌊 Arrive 20 minutes early to meet the Patrol Captain and get geared up in your Patrol uniform – shirt, shorts, hat, and patrol cap are a must!

🏖️ Patrol times are on your club roster, so make sure you know how to access the roster, what dates you need to be there and for how long.

👋 If you need to step away during Patrol (to get some food or go to the bathroom), check in with your PC first.

📢 Your Patrol will kick off with a pre-patrol brief and wrap up with a debrief at the end of the day.  This is where you can understand what you need to do to help the team

🆘 If you spot any issues in the water or on the beach, report to your PC right away – safety first!

🥤 Pack some snacks, a drink, and your phone in your bag for a fun and energised Patrol

👍 Get ready to share your lifesaving skills and support the team like a pro!  Make sure you practice your skills – find time with the PC and go for a swim, take the board out and say hello to swimmers between the flags!

👩‍✈️ Your PC/VC will handle any beach emergencies, and you might get to play a role in the action

🤝 You’ll be part of a tight knit team with experienced lifesavers guiding you along the way

🏊‍♂️ If you fancy a swim or paddle during Patrol, check in with the PC first
