Despite the best efforts of concerned members of the public and emergency responders a man has drowned at Kioloa’s Racecourse Beach on the NSW South Coast.

It is understood that the man aged in his 20s was swimming at the southern end of beach when he got into difficulty shortly before 2pm on Saturday.

He was pulled out of the water by members of the public who had witnessed the incident.

The stricken man’s rescuers had the presence of mind to immediately commence CPR treatment on him and alert emergency services.

After being altered to the incident the State Operations Centre informed a South Coast Duty Officer, and tasked the Westpac Life Saver Helicopter out of Moruya to attend the scene.

Sadly, despite the intensive CPR efforts from all involved, the man was unable to be revived.

Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steven Pearce said today’s incident coming so close to resumption of volunteer patrols was a reminder of the power of the ocean.

“This was a tragic incident for everyone involved, while the professional response gave the young man the best chance,” said Mr Pearce.

“Unfortunately, this was the worst possible outcome and on behalf of the surf lifesaving community, I would like to express our thoughts and condolences to the man’s family and friends.

Volunteer surf lifesavers will resume patrols for the 2018/19 season next Saturday 29 September
