Despite the fast response of Surf Life Saving and emergency service personnel, a 27-year-old man drowned yesterday at remote Wattamolla Beach after swimming in a coastal lagoon outside lifeguard patrol hours.
A large school of whaler sharks (e.g. spinner, dusky, bull sharks) was spotted at Evans Head on the state’s far north coast yesterday, causing the beach to be closed for most of the day.

In response to research that highlighted 50 percent of people rescued from the surf live more than 50km from the beach, volunteer surf lifesavers have been visiting schools in rural and remote areas of NSW for the last 26 years to educate primary school students about beach safety as a part of Surf Life Saving NSW’s iconic Beach to Bush initiative.
