When most people picture our nation’s capital they think of wide open spaces and the heartland of political power; indeed a day at the beach and a bunch of Nippers running around would probably be the last thing to come to mind.  But one surf life saving club is trying to change that perception and is winning acclaim for those efforts.

Beaches across Sydney are expected to remain closed for at least the remainder of Wednesday after powerful swells prompted agencies to issue warnings about potentially hazardous surf conditions.

Although it was almost two decades after obtaining his Bronze Medallion before he would return to the beach in a formal capacity, Coalcliff’s Robert Deacon has certainly made up for lost time by enthusiastically throwing himself into his club.

As thousands of NSW Year 12 graduates make their final preparations for the traditional schoolies week which officially kicks off from Saturday, the lifesaving community is issuing a warning to those looking to cool off during the celebrations; alcohol and the ocean are a dangerous combination.

Surf Life Saving NSW is excited to be one of the first charity partners to benefit from the introduction of the NSW container deposit scheme.

They are a common sight on beaches across the state, powering through the surf on the way to plucking stranded swimmers out of the water, and this weekend surf lifesavers from across Sydney and the Far North coast will be making their way to Garie Beach for an important training session.
