Surf Life Saving NSW partnered with Envirobank to help NSW surf clubs and the environment through the recycling of eligible containers. Over the 12 month period since the scheme started over 50 clubs have raised up to $1,800 each. They’re funds that can make a significant difference to any club.

Newcastle SLSC joined the movement with ease. President, Brad Kinniard said, “Very little was involved. We started off with the orange donation bags, however due to its popularity we quickly graduated to having a cage for collection. Now we use the big blue bins which are collected every week or more often if we need them. Envirobank have been terrific, it’s been painless.”

The recycling initiative has been supported by the Newcastle SLSC bar and local events. “Every cent counts when saving for lifesaving and club equipment,” said Mr. Kinniard.

Ocean Beach SLSC has just purchased 10 new Nipper boards with the goal to purchase 10 more before the start of the new season with the funds raised from the Envirobank scheme.

“It’s a great cause, we all want to do our bit to save the environment,” said Elaine Unger from Ocean Beach SLSC. “We have already been able to use our funds to buy new equipment. I believe every club should jump on board.”

Chris Collimore from Coledale SLSC recommends all clubs to get involved, “I absolutely recommend this initiative. It’s such a good opportunity for a club to raise money. We have benefited through the use of the donation bins and pop-ups, which have increased our community engagement.

“We liaised with Envirobank and our RSL Club in Coledale who agreed to put a donation bin on their site with all funds raised going to our club. It was a really easy, low maintenance fundraising method for us.”
