About Us
Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) is the peak body for coastal and aquatic safety in New South Wales. Through a network of volunteer and professional services, SLSNSW delivers lifesaving, rescue, emergency response, education and community safety programs across the State.
The State Operations Centre (SOC) is SLSNSW’s central operational coordination capability, providing statewide situational awareness, emergency response coordination, operational communications, incident management and resource coordination across one of Australia’s largest coastal emergency service networks. The SOC supports operations across 129 Surf Life Saving Clubs, more than 200 lifeguard service locations, approximately 80 UAV service locations, a statewide fleet of rescue watercraft and response assets, specialist rescue capabilities, emergency management functions and partner agency operations.
Role Purpose
Reporting to the Emergency Management & State Operations Manager, the State Duty Officer provides frontline operational leadership within the State Operations Centre. As the senior operational representative on shift, the State Duty Officer coordinates statewide incidents and operational activities, supervises and supports SOC operational staff, supports emergency response operations, and ensures activities are conducted in accordance with organisational policies, procedures and operational doctrine.
The role plays a key part in maintaining operational readiness, supporting incident management activities and contributing to the continuous improvement of SLSNSW operational capability.
Key Accountabilities
Act as the operational lead within the State Operations Centre during rostered shifts.
Coordinate statewide operational activities, incidents and emergency response operations.
Maintain situational awareness of incidents, emerging risks, weather impacts and resource availability.
Receive, assess and coordinate requests for assistance and operational support.
Supervise, support and mentor SOC operational staff.
Ensure operational activities are conducted in accordance with organisational policies, procedures, legislative requirements and operational doctrine.
Maintain accurate operational records, reports and incident documentation.
Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of operational systems, procedures and capability frameworks.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with members, staff, emergency service organisations and government agencies.
Essential Requirements
Experience in an operations centre, coordination centre, communications centre, control room or similar environment.
Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in a dynamic operational setting.
Ability to make sound decisions under pressure and manage competing priorities.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures and operational guidelines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong computer literacy and ability to quickly learn operational systems.
Ability to work a roster including weekends and public holidays and be on call overnight at rostered times.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
Experience within Surf Life Saving NSW operational or emergency management environments.
Understanding of the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre and its role in supporting statewide operational coordination and emergency response activities.
Experience within emergency services, public safety, Defence or volunteer-based response organisations.
Certificate III in Public Safety.
Certificate III in Search and Rescue.
