With hazardous weather conditions forecast to impact the NSW coastline from Friday, Surf Life Saving NSW is urging the public to exercise extreme caution when visiting the coastline this weekend.
The Hard Yakka Work Force
Each year for the last five years there is a group of about 130 hard yakka Swansea Belmont club members who don their bright green t-shirts to bring the State Championships to life. They’re at the beach well before dawn and are picking up the last piece of rubbish and pulling down the final roller door after the last competitor has driven back over the Belmont bridge.
International Water Safety Day: Babar’s Story
International Water Safety Day is 15 May each year. This year Surf Life Saving NSW has launched Babar’s story to mark the annual day of water safety awareness. The video takes viewers on a coastal experience that is shared by many inexperienced visitors to the beach. While the journey, in this case, is undertaken by a family from a culturally and linguistically diverse community. It is a story shared by those from our regional and remote communities along with many from our cities. Babar’s story aims to teach our communities that beach safety starts at home.
School Drone Program Targets Girls in Science
Surf Life Saving NSW’s Australian UAV Service (AUAVS) in partnership with She Maps has launched a drone program for school students in Years 5-9 in NSW and the ACT, with a focus on getting more girls involved in engineering and technology.
Fatal Shark Incident at Tuncurry Beach
At approximately 11.23am on Tuesday 18 May the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre was advised by NSW Police and Ambulance of a shark attack at Tuncurry Beach north of Forster.
Kiama Downs Dominates First Round of IRB Series
The first IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) racing event in two years kicked off in perfect conditions at Terrigal over the weekend. Over 300 surf lifesavers from 17 clubs travelled to the Central Coast location for the first round of the 2021 Sharkskin NSW IRB Premiership Series.
Rescue of Four People Recognised with State Award
Off-duty surf lifesavers and lifeguards who stood up together to save four lives in a successful coordinated rescue effort on the Central Coast have been awarded the Surf Life Saving NSW Rescue of the Month award in recognition of their achievements.
