It is understood that shortly before 5pm a group of five was swimming at the southern end of the famous Sydney beach when they got into difficulty.
The State Operations Centre tasked two Sydney Duty Officers to attend the incident and provide assistance if required.
All members of the group were pulled from the water by Lifeguards with three emerging unscathed and not needing any further treatment.
The remaining two an unconscious male and a woman required urgent medical care.
CPR was immediately commenced on the man but despite the best efforts of all those involved he was unable to be revived.
The woman was assessed by paramedics and given initial first aid before being transported to hospital for further treatment.
It is believed that the group were tourists.
Today’s incident continues a horrible 24 hour period in NSW waters with the man becoming the second person to drown following the death of a man at Bellinger on the State’s North Coast on Wednesday.
An investigation into the incident at Bondi will be launched with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
