#DRONES // These numbers speak for themselves; 450+ pilots, 85,000+ flights 😮 Our UAV service across the state is huge and it is continuing to operate even throughout the winter period with additional locations added between now and August.

What happens when a shark is spotted by a drone pilot? Well, each pilot is logged on as active at their location with the State Operations Centre (SOC) so when they locate a shark they alert the SOC who can then activate appropriate resources and personnel.

#OFFICIALS // Behind the shot with our incredible Beach events officials. ✨They groom the Flags pit, stay braced for for the tight finishes and endure all weather from extreme heat to cyclonic wind. Their job can be tough but they show up, work together and have some good laughs too - some have become friends for life.

#TRAINING // This weekend our clubs were a buzz with training and community opportunities. Here are a couple from around the grounds:

👉 At @thirroulsurfclub there was a Silver Medallion Patrol Captains course held for @surflifesavingillawarra members

👉 At @lennoxheadslsc Chris and Bryan completed their IRB Crew qualifications

👉 At @deewhyslsc the club hosted a Chinese Australian Community Group, Beach Safety and Educational experience day.

👉 @mereslsc hosted an IRB Driver and Crew assessment for @huntersurflifesaving members

👉 @bsslsc had @lizziewelborn in town to deliver her @kamanacommunity young women’s program.

Luckily tonight the skies have cleared in Sydney. Our Event Safety Team heads out for another year to support @destination_nsw in providing water safety and medical services at @vividsydney.

#MILESTONES // How many clubs in NSW do you think are celebrating or have passed their 100 year milestone? Well, the number surprised us too, it’s 62/129 clubs!

Here’s a collection of photos from Black Head Surf Life Saving Club’s 100 year history, celebrated in October 2025. Records indicate that no lives have been lost on Black Head Beach during patrol hours in that entire century of service.

This strong and vibrant organisation traces its beginnings back to 1925, when several drownings and near‑drownings prompted local resident Frederick Charles Postle to approach Manning Shire Council on 21 September 1925. Councillor Wylie Breckenridge strongly supported the proposal, recognising the growing popularity of surf bathing among both locals and visitors and the need for proper safety measures.

To show how times may change but some things stay the same; the club assisted in the 1929 Taree floods. Together with Taree Old Bar Surf Life Saving Club (Official) members the club crews used their surf boats to rescue more than 50 people stranded by the raging Manning River. The crews rowed tirelessly throughout the night and day to bring people and animals to safety and then deliver food an supplies in the days after.

It’s sentiment and scenes like this that have been repeated countless times throughout our organisations history in response to community crisis and natural disasters. Time, and time again it reminds us and our communities of the significance of our coastal rescue capabilities, care and core values.

#EMERGENCYSERVICE // taking beach safety inland is an important and impactful part of what we do at Surf Life Saving NSW and through our volunteer drone capabilities.

On the weekend the team had a great day out at the Singleton Emergency Service Expo. An awesome initiative that a lot more councils are delivering across a wide range of areas. We delivered community education, static drone and RWC displays and we even got a 15 minute time slot to do a live UAV demonstration.

Although we weren’t anywhere close to the beach, every family we spoke to goes to the beach regularly or holidays at the beach, further reinforcing the importance of community engagement and education across all communities.
