In this edition we feature the NSW Government Surf Club Facility Grants, which has seen $4 million in funding awarded to 26 NSW surf clubs, the award winning and largest co-ordinated and resourced search and rescue operation in the history of Surf Life Saving Illawarra and the incredible efforts of surf clubs around the country in raising $130,000 for mental health charities during the 24 Hour Row.
In this edition we feature the SLSNSW record funding package, designed to help surf clubs in NSW recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the award winning rescue of a 32-year-old rock fisher at Port Stephens and how artificial intelligence is helping drone pilots identify shark species and keep beachgoers safe.
Rock fishing is arguably one of the most dangerous sports and hobbies in Australia. Every year a disproportionate number of people are killed while rock fishing. Rock fishing is undertaken in a number of locations with small and large rock formations.
The 2020 Coastal Safety Brief – Boating, identifies that coastal drowning deaths while boating is the second highest activity undertaken when a drowning occurs.
In this edition of SurfLIFE we feature the astonishing rescue of four people by a fourteen-year-old Nipper in northern NSW, the development of a Surf Life Saving Club in Gaza (thanks to the support of a Northern Beaches surf club) and the response of surf lifesavers during the devastating NSW bushfire emergency. We celebrate 40 years of women in Surf Life Saving with the all women’s March Past at the 2020 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships and the heroic mass rescue by an off duty surf lifesaver on Sydney’s Bronte Beach. We also look at the positive impact unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) are having on extending lifesaving services.
In this edition of SurfLIFE, we feature the 50th anniversary of the iconic “Rubber Duckie” surf rescue boat, the inaugural Surf Life Saving Day event at NSW Parliament House and the launch of our new podcast series. We report on the successful Beach to Bush program and we congratulate five new SLSNSW life members. We also bring you the story of the rescues, performed by a group of off-duty surf lifesavers, that won them the National Rescue of the Month Award – presented by Prime Minister Scott Morrison
